Diane M. Fales

At an early age drawing cartoons, I realized I would only be satisfied if I spent the rest of my life as an artist.

I am profoundly effected by the abstract expressionist artists of the 1950's and 1960's.  The use of color as emotion and expression through the movement of lines/shapes has always been what interests me.  The concept of the "moment of expression" is an important factor in this
artist's journey to achieve my soul's purpose. This is what I find keeps coming back as truth.  My philosophy on art is that it should be thought provoking, playful, surprising and poetic.  This does not necessarily mean the work needs to be "traditionally" beautiful.  Color relationships on the canvas or wall are more important visually, than the people or things in the picture.   In exploring color against color with no backgrounds or shadows, it simplifies the story for the viewer.  The painting becomes pure emotion.  It becomes an experiment, comparing how much reaction is due to realism and how much is due to color.   I believe, as do many modern artists, that we react to colors more positively than images.  Consequently, by reducing images, breaking my work down into pure color and shapes the work is a truer part of my vision.

I received my Bachelors degree in Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting from Northern Arizona University.   I have spent subsequent years volunteering and creating artwork that is personal and which propels me forward toward the goal of my souls pure expression.

I am currently in the Certificate in Public Art program at Arizona State University.  Public art is close to my heart because I believe it is a necessary daily experience for a civilized human existence to grow in shared environments.  Whether it is a site specific piece, art integrated into the architecture or landscape design, these are creations of spirit in our spaces.  With public art, a personality is formed in an organic way.  This new aspect or familiar entity becomes a part of our daily lives, we feel more complete with this character in it.  The sight of our personified space reminds us where we are in this world, not alone, understood and connected to everyone around us.
